The Spiritual Jungle

Rangers Lead The Way!

Just as the soldier faces enemy ambushes in the physical jungle, the spiritual warrior faces spiritual ambushes in the real world.  (“Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  I Peter 5:8)

I always wanted to write a book about the Christian in the world of work, because we spend so much time on our jobs.  Every time I tried to write about this, it came out that all a Christian needed to do was be a good Christian.  But I knew a lot of “good Christians”  that failed to do what is right and got caught up in all kinds of un-Christian activities.  It is truly a jungle out there.

It was at that point that it occurred to me that what I learned in the Army’s Ranger School about how to avoid and/or survive the enemy’s ambush in the physical jungle, might be helpful to the Christian avoiding and/or surviving ambushes from the “roaring lion” in the spiritual world.

I graduated from Ranger School in September, 1965 (Class # 1-66).  This was the fall following the extensive commitment of U.S. Troops to Vietnam the previous summer.

Ranger School taught not only how to be a better soldier, but they taught about the jungle they were putting the soldier in.  Ranger school taught that there were some dangerous places in the enemy infested jungle for the Ranger, i.e., roads, streams, ridge tops, open areas, trails, etc.  These are dangerous because this is where the enemy sets up ambushes.  They know that soldiers like to take the easy path through the jungle.  This is what gets Christians in trouble on the job, taking the easy path.

To identify these danger areas and the use of Ranger Tactics to counter spiritual ambushes, I interviewed Christians and asked them to tell me of spiritual challenges they had faced on their jobs. I asked them to tell me how they recognized they were in a danger area and what they did. I summarized what they told me in a book published in 2002, “The Jungle: Spiritual Danger Areas in the World of Work.” This book is available on Amazon.  Click on the image of the book to get to Amazon. A second manuscript is being developed to be published in 2014 titled “The Spiritual Ambush.”
